Beef Production Specialist

Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) is seeking a knowledgeable, experienced and energetic person to become our Beef Production Specialist. The Beef Production Specialist will work in our Calgary office and be responsible for providing technical support and strategic direction to ABP in all areas of beef production, including cattle health and welfare, cattle and beef research, and beef production practices. The successful candidate will work with ABP staff, directors, and delegates, as well as cattle producers, external organizations, research agencies, and government officials, to identify issues, compile and analyze information, and provide advice on appropriate policy positions and strategies for ABP.

Candidates for the position must have a university degree in animal science or veterinary medicine and a minimum of five years experience working in the agriculture industry. Applicants must have a detailed knowledge of cattle production practices, animal health and welfare issues, and research protocols. The successful candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to apply knowledge, research, analysis and collaboration with other professionals to understanding and solving complex technical problems. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of government regulations and policy processes, as well as some experience dealing with government officials. ABP is a democratic and representative organization that works on behalf of close to 28,000 cattle producers in Alberta. It is an organization of cattle producers run by cattle producers. ABP is governed by a Board of Directors and Executive elected from the delegates that cattle producers across the province elect at fall meetings each year. The commission is funded by a mandatory, refundable service charge that is collected on the sale of cattle in Alberta. The mission of ABP is to strengthen the sustainability and competitiveness of the beef industry for the benefit of beef producers in Alberta.
